Do the next right thing

“Do the next right thing.”

This short missive has helped me many times in my life. stepping-stones-763985_960_720When I am feeling confused, overwhelmed, frustrated or lazy and bored, it always gets me moving forward.

You see, I don’t have to have all the answers or figure out a solution. I don’t even have to wonder how or why I got myself into a situation. All I have to do is the next right thing.

Sometimes, when I ask myself what the next right thing is, I think of three or four things that seem right, and then I just pick the one that is most important to me at that moment in my life.

The other day, “the next right thing” was to write cards to three people I care deeply about and who will be happy to receive a thank-you, get well, or “thinking of you” note in the mail.  Relationships matter a great deal to me, so that was an easy pick over the laundry and dishes that were waiting for me, but until I posed the actual question to myself – the cards and stamps sat on the dining room table.

On a different day, writing a post or sending work emails might get bumped to the front of the line. Or something much more important, such as apologizing to someone, may take top billing. The choice is yours.

Doing the next right thing is an act of faith in yourself and your priorities. It comes from knowing what really matters to you. It is a softer, more flexible type of to-do list. And, if you like checking things off, you can keep on ongoing “ta-da” list handy to write them down as you complete them along with a nice big check mark.

You will feel so good after doing the next right thing, you will be motivated to accomplish more of the items that come to mind. Until, of course, the next right thing to do is to relax, which will be much easier to do, when you know you’ve already done the right thing!

You can do it!

Time to celebrate with your personal “Ta Da” list

It’s time to begin celebrating your triumphs. This is the fifth year I’ve posted about this timely topic; I love creating blog traditions!  Today is the 186 day of 2016, which is just past the halfway point.  It is the perfect time to celebrate you and your life by creating your very own “Ta Da” list.  The Wishful Thinking Works “Ta Da” list is much more fun than a “To Do” list, because it’s for all the wonderful things you’ve already accomplished!

What have you accomplished this year that just six months ago seemed impossible or a distant possibility? (Feel free to include anything you have ever accomplished – this is the time to toot your horn.)

What new trails have you blazed?

What have you found the strength to face?

What promises have you kept?

What chances did you take?

What teeny, tiny or wondrously huge steps have you taken in the direction of your dreams?

I think that since folks will be celebrating today with parties, picnics and pyrotechnics for the Fourth of July, it’s a fantastic time to combine our patriotic triumphs with our personal ones – and celebrate them all!

Start now to make this Fourth of July your personal Independence Day. Complete your “Ta Da” list to light-up your life by counting your successes.

Most of us spend way more time thinking about what we haven’t done, than what we have done. It’s time to change all that and make 2016 your year of the have’s not the have not’s

Celebrating success builds confidence, which moves us forward faster and makes us happier along the way!

fireworks-180553__180Don’t be shy – this is the season for aiming high and lighting up the sky. List everything you have accomplished, big and small, and then, when you are watching “the rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air” congratulate yourself on your 2016 accomplishments thus far, and all the exciting ones that lay ahead. Let those bright lights and loud booms ignite a sense of personal pride just for you.

Wishful Thinking Ways for 2016

Are you ready to step into 2016? The year ahead holds lots of wonderful, exciting discoveries and adventures for you. I guarantee – if you allow yourself to be open to them – there are moments of unbelievable depth, splendor and joy waiting for you. calendar-999172_960_720

Each week in 2016, I will be posting about letting go, listening patiently and living gently. I will share positive psychology tips on perspective, perseverance and passion. We will explore ways to expand your belief in yourself and how to create the life you really want.

Oh, and I’m going to start the year by suggesting that you wait until April 1, to set your New Year’s resolutions – no fooling! Cut yourself some slack this year, and try a different approach. You need time to explore what you really want before you commit yourself to a course of action!

I’ve listed two quick steps for you to follow today, but before you read them, as silly as it may sound, I would like you to get up – right now, at this very second – and step back, then step forward, step back and step forward. I know it sounds ridiculous, but taking the steps sends your brain the message you are ready for action and you’re committed to the process. I call it the “success two-step”.

We will wait for you; go ahead, get up . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

footprints-511553_960_720Step back and step forward, step back and step forward.

Great, you have taken your first steps toward success in 2016!

Are you smiling, shrugging your shoulders, or shaking your head and thinking “That was stupid”? No matter – you did it! You took action and tried something new, and that is what change is all about.

Okay, now you are ready for your first Wishful Thinking Ways for 2016.

Step Back

Now, take a few minutes to list all the good things that happened to you in 2015. Include everything you can think of and keep the list around so you can add to it throughout the next 3 months. (Please feel free to download the free Wishful Thinking Works “Ta Da” list to get you started.)

List the happy moments; your accomplishments – big and small; sweet surprises, and exciting news. Dig deep, if you have to, but get all the good stuff down on paper. List only the good.  please forget about the rest for now, okay? Good, I know you can do it.

Step Forward

Next, write “2016 will be a wonderful year.” Now, please read the sentence out loud. “2016 will be a wonderful year.” (Louder!) That’s good.

Write the same sentence two more times, and read it aloud each time you write it. Great job! (Please don’t cheat yourself by skipping this step, it is an important primer for you and your brain!)

That’s it for now. You have completed the success two-step. You are on your way. Hope I put a smile on your face and a spring in your step.

Have a great day!

Celebrate you this New Year’s Eve

new-years-eve-1004535_960_720As the New Year rolls around it is way too easy to get bogged down in what we didn’t accomplish or do this year and to start making long lists of what we need to do in the New Year.

I think a much better and more rewarding way to start the New Year is to remember how wonderful you are by creating your personal “Ta Da” list I created this pdf years ago for a Wishful Thinking Works post and I use it twice a year to remind myself of all the good things – big or small – that have happened or that I have accomplished.

Why not use New Year ‘s Eve to celebrate you and what you have done instead of worrying about what you didn’t do?

Even if 2015 was your toughest year yet, you survived, and that is worth celebrating.

champagne-584072_960_720If you are alone on New Year’s Eve, embrace it! Buy some bubbly, treat yourself to food you love, pop in a movie, read a good book or soak in a luxurious bath and savor being you. (Some of my best New Year’s Eves were spent alone – outdoors, reflecting on all the good things in my life. I sipped something wonderful, tasted something delicious and savored the moments.)

As the New Year dawns, don’t worry about what’s next, just enjoy what is. You made it this far in life and have so much more to look forward to.

Happy New Year!
