Did you enjoy doing what you did today?
One of the best ways to determine whether or not we are living the life we really want, is simply to ask ourselves on a daily basis, did we enjoy doing what we did today?
- Was my work fulfilling? Was it fun?
- Was being alone or around people where I wanted to be?
- Did I act in accordance with what I truly value?
- Was I challenged, or happy not to be?
The key is to find your happy zone, compare it to what you’ve got – without beating up on yourself – and then make the necessary changes to bring it into balance.
I am not suggesting that each and everyday of our lives will be our best or that we will love what we are doing at all times, but their should be a pattern of joy, fulfilment and contentment over a period of time.
If you don’t check-in with yourself, it is easy to be swept-up into weeks, months, years and even decades of complacency, disappointment, and disillusionment, and over time, it becomes easier and easier to convince yourself that is the way it is supposed to be. But it is not! Happiness is good. Contentment and peace of mind are where it is at! Attaining joy, a sense of purpose, and fulfillment are worth the effort.
Don’t short change yourself or your life. Create the habit of checking-in with yourself. Use a judgement free approach to discover what could make your life better or make it feel like the one you really want. Start by asking yourself:
Is this where I want to be?
- Was today a good day, and if so, what made it so? What did I like about it?
- If not, what would I change? What would make me feel better about today?
Always reward yourself for a good day with a smile, an “atta girl” or whatever makes you feel good. On the not-so-good days, find a comforting phrase to take the sting out of any disappointments – “I know today was hard, but I also know you can and will do better.”
Use compassion to motivate your change. Find the voice that works for you, and don’t be afraid to use it! Words are powerful motivators and positive self-talk is the gift only you can give yourself.
Don’t wait to create change until you are overwhelmed and depressed with the direction your life has taken, start today to make small changes that help you realign your psychic spine!
Get in tune with what you really want by checking-in.
